Susan Glaspells Trifles Essay Example for Free
Susan Glaspells Trifles Essay Susan Glaspellââ¬â¢s play, Trifles, explores the fact that women pay attention to the little things that may lead to the solution of a bigger problem. Why do women pay attention to the little things? Could it be because the attention to detail is the starting point to solving the bigger problem? Letââ¬â¢s think of the ââ¬Ëlittle thingsââ¬â¢ like pieces of a puzzle. When all the little pieces are put together, they usually form a picture; therefore you see the whole picture. In this play, the men think itââ¬â¢s just like women to worry about the little details that they see throughout the house, they think itââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ëtrifleââ¬â¢. What they donââ¬â¢t seem to realize is that by the women paying attention to the little things, they are actually solving the murder of Mr. Wright. The first little detail is the fruit preserves when Mrs. Peters said to Mrs. Hale ââ¬Å"She worried about that when it turned so cold. She said the fireââ¬â¢d go out and her jars would break.â⬠Thatââ¬â¢s when the Sheriff replied ââ¬Å"Well, can you beat the women! Held for murder and worryinââ¬â¢ about her preserves.â⬠(Glaspell, 2010, lines 27-29, p 143). If Mrs. Wright hadnââ¬â¢t been preoccupied, she could have started a fire to keep the preserves from freezing. Why was Mrs. Wright preoccupied? This is probably when the two women thought that perhaps the Wrights were having an argument or maybe even something worse was happening. Another little detail is the fact that Mrs. Wright didnââ¬â¢t wake up while her husband was being strangled to death. Unless Mr. Mrs. Wright slept in separate beds she should have felt him struggling while the noose was being put around his neck or heard him gasping for air. It also seemed strange that there was a gun in the house and it wasnââ¬â¢t used. Why strangle him? Why not use the gun? According to an essay on Susan Glaspellââ¬â¢s Trifles, the author noted ââ¬Å"The strangling of Mr. Wright, which perplexes all when a gun was handy, is reminiscent of the strangling of that bird.â⬠(Susan Glaspell) Another little detail the women notice was the empty birdcage that was stuffed in the cupboard with no bird in it. Mrs. Hale asked if the Wrights had a cat, to which Mrs. Peters replied, ââ¬Å"No, she didnââ¬â¢t have a cat. Sheââ¬â¢s got that feeling some people have about catsââ¬âbeing afraid of them.â⬠(Glaspell, 2010, line 84, p 146). Then they notice the broken door hinge and Mrs. Hale thought it looked like someone was rough with it and being rough with the cage was perhaps a sign of anger. An example of anger and hostility was when Mrs. Hale described what it was like to be around Mr. Wright. But he was a hard man, Mrs. Peters. Just to pass the time of day with himlike a raw wind that gets to the bone.â⬠(Glaspell, 2010, line 97, p 146). Mrs. Hale then went on to explain how Mrs. Wright was like a bird. ââ¬Å"ââ¬âreal sweet and pretty, but kind of timid andââ¬âfluttery. Howââ¬âsheââ¬âdidââ¬âchange.â⬠(Glaspell, 2010, line 101, p 146). The Mrs. Wright that is described here is different from the character we know in the play. The women we know in the play seemed to be a cold and angry woman. She didnââ¬â¢t have children and the only company she had was a bird. Mrs. Hale suggested to Mrs. Peters that she bring the quilt to Mrs. Wright in the jail. While they look for scissors and more patchwork to take with them, Mrs. Hale finds the dead bird wrapped up in a little box to which she exclaims ââ¬Å"But, Mrs. Petersââ¬âlook at it. Its neck! Look at its neck! Itââ¬â¢s allââ¬âto the other side.â⬠and Mrs. Peters says, ââ¬Å"Somebodyââ¬âwrungââ¬âits neck.â⬠(Glaspell, lines 107-108, p 146). This is when the two women realize Mrs. Wright killed her husband, but neither of them wants to break the alliance they made and turn her in. Mrs. Wright was living her life as if she was already living in jail. That kind of life is such a lonely and isolated one. A person would do just about anything to escape that emotional and physical prison. Because these women took notice of all the ââ¬Å"little thingsâ⬠, they were able to put the puzzle together, piece by piece. They were able to feel the loneliness and pain of Mrs. Wright. They were able to see the whole picture and solve the case. Because the men were only interested in physical evidence they were not able to see the little things that the women did. They were not able to come to any conclusions as to what happened and why. Instead, they made fun of and belittled Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters for worrying about the little things. Comparing and Contrasting Hughess Mother to Son and Wilburs The Write
Comparing and Contrasting Hughes's Mother to Son and Wilbur's The Writer Whether life is a steep climb up a shaky stairway or a challenging voyage over rough seas, a parent hopes a child will persevere to the end. In Langston Hughes's poem "Mother to Son" and in Richard Wilbur's poem "The Writer," the poets use the voice of a parent considering a child's future, and both use imagery of struggle and survival to suggest what lies ahead for the child. Although the point of view, context, and language of the two poems differ significantly, the message is the same: a parent wants a good life for his or her child, but knows that many obstacles can block the way. While Hughes and Wilbur share a similar message in their poems, their points of view are very different. Hughes uses a first-person narrator, a mother speaking directly to her son. The title of the poem itself, "Mother to Son," states this point of view. The reader is listening in on a one-on-one conversation. The opening line introduces the mother's monologue: "Well, son, I'll tell you." The point of view stays consistent as the mother describes what life's stairway has been like for her: "Life for me ain't been no crystal stair" (2 and 20), and urges her son to do as she has done: "I'se still climbin'" (19). She addresses her son directly throughout the poem, calling him "son" (1), "boy" (14), and "honey" (18). The poem is entirely in the mother's speaking voice, with the informalities of someone speaking privately to a close relative and the grammatical errors of someone who is probably not well educated. Richard Wilbur's poem is also written in the first person, but the narrator does not address his daughter directly until the final stanza (31-33). The first thir... ...s her message across in twenty short, simple lines. Both "Mother to Son" and "The Writer" offer a parent's sincere message to a child. However, the poems' points of view, contexts, and language show two parents who have traveled very different paths before offering their messages. The reader sees that parents' hopes and concerns for a child are universal, even though their expression differs. Works Cited Bixler, Frances. Richard Wilbur: A Reference Guide. Boston: G.K. Understanding Rhetorical Structures as They Pertain to Audience
Understanding Rhetorical Structures as they pertain to audience, purpose, and context Understanding Rhetorical Structure Colton Kiefer EN1420 This paper is about the understanding of the Rhetorical Structures as they pertain to audience, purpose, and context and how they affect the argument of whether taxes should be raised on higher income brackets in order to fund social programs for at-risk and underserved, low income children. I will discuss the relationship between the audience, purpose, and context to the context of the argument. Understanding Rhetorical StructuresHow do audience, purpose, and context affect the argument of whether taxes should be raised on higher income brackets in order to fund social programs for at-risk and underserved, low income children. I will discuss the relationship between the audience, purpose, and context to the context of the argument. Discussion The goal of this discussion is to see the relationship between audience, purpose, and context of shoul d Taxes be raised for higher income brackets in order to fund social programs for at-risk, underserved, and low income children. The first audience for this group are wealth fortune 500 CEOââ¬â¢s. They are considered the in the higher income bracket in my opinion. They need to be educated on the understanding that even though most lower income families struggle, it is not because they are not trying. The economy has taken its toll on a lot of jobs here in the US over the past couple of years and even though they are working a full time job and sometimes two full time jobs, they cannot afford any kind of social program for their children. The present economy conditions are hurting the lower income families to the point that they struggle to make ends meet and can sometimes barley afford to put food on the table for their children. The higher income bracket would need to see just how little the additional taxes would take from them and what the benefits of those taxes could do for a low income family struggling to make ends meet. They still could possibly not be receptive to the idea, but giving them examples of the cost and benefits of such programs I think they would start to understand. The second audience for this group is the low income families of at-risk, and underserved, low income children. They need to be educated on the benefits that could come from the higher taxes. In my opinion, the higher income bracket can afford the higher taxes to fund some of these programs. The cost of living, food, gas, and housing all affect the income of many families in the US. If they understood what could come from the taxes, they could get some reissuance as to vote on such a bill if it came up to vote for the public.Education on the subject of the current tax laws would be a good example of what the different taxes brackets that are used today in the US. Lower income families would jump on the idea of being able to send their children to a soccer camp, or baseball cam p. According to an article on ââ¬Å"Taxing the rich is good for the economyâ⬠, raising taxes on the higher income bracket would reduce the taxes on low and middle income families. This would also allow for those families to keep more of their income to use towards these programs. All in all I think it would be a beneficial idea to entertain. The context of the economy, food, and taxes all play an important role in this argument. The higher income bracket would be resistant to the idea until they were presented with facts on the cost and the minimal decrease in income for them. The lower income families would be blessed with some relief with their childrenââ¬â¢s social experience and the ability to provide more learning resources to them. An Evalution of the Attachment Theory Essay - 13038 Words

Anâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Theory based strategies help carers of Looked after Children to facilitate and rebuild secure attachments when they are supporting and working with children in care, or if they move placements for example, into an adoptive or foster family. These strategies help the carers manage and understand challenging behaviour that is often caused as a consequence of an insecure attachment. Attachment can be defined as a long-lasting bond that is developed by infants towards their parents and is described as ââ¬Ëa positive emotional link between two people ââ¬â a link of affectionââ¬â¢. (Lindon,1998,35,Cited in Crawford et al, 2005). Attachment disorders can impact on a childââ¬â¢s developmental wellbeing throughout childhood and into adolescence. Evaluating the attachment theory can show different ways these disorders affect the relationship of the child and carer. British psychotherapist, John Bowlby (1907-1990) was recognized as the father of the attachment theory and advanced a multidisciplinary stance, which included psychoanalysis with ethnology and cognitive development. Bowlby (1969) wanted to understand more about the level of distress that occurred in infants when they were separated from their parents and how that experience impacted on their developmental wellbeing. There are strong associations between early insecure attachments and later negative vulnerabilities and problematical

Christopher Columbus A Hero And Founder Of The New World
Was Christopher Columbus a hero and founder of the new world or villainous destroyer of indigenous people? There is much controversy and debate around this man. Many people believe that Columbusââ¬â¢s discoveries were falsified or over exaggerated and that his misdeeds are left untold. Others believe that he was a great explorer and was responsible for the discovery and shaping of the new world. Is Christopher Columbus the brave explorer who ushered in the ââ¬Å"age of explorationâ⬠, or was he the brutal and violent man who destroyed thousands of lives on his explorations for power and riches? Christopher Columbus was born in 1451, in the Republic of Genoa (Italy). His father worked as a weaver, Christopher did not take up his fatherââ¬â¢s trade and become a sailor on the Mediterranean. During one of his travels in 1476 he became shipwrecked and washed up on the shores of Portugal. Luckily for Christopher his brother was a well renowned chart maker who lived in Lisbon, P ortugal. Christopher lived with his little brother for some time and learned the trade of chart making. He later left Portugal and traveled all over the European continent. It is believed he went as far as England and some parts of Scandinavia. During his travels he used his skills with charts to help him become a master navigator. He did not return to Portugal until 1479, the reason for his return was to be married. His wife died shortly after giving birth to his son in 1480. Review on Michael Mooreââ¬â¢s ââ¬ÅCapitalism, a Love Storyââ¬Â Free Essays
The way the stock market works in the world today is if there is a Stock (Piece or share of a company) that are being bought out by a lot of investors, the price of the stock will increase extraordinary high. If the stock does not get bought, the price of the stock will lower to a cheaper price. To buy the best stock that will soon be more valuable is a race as brokers try and fight to find the potential grossing stock and buy tons of them at a cheap price to later on earn tons of money as it becomes more valuable to invest and sell as the stock value increases and grosses. We will write a custom essay sample on Review on Michael Mooreââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Capitalism, a Love Storyâ⬠or any similar topic only for you Order Now The stock market consists of a lot of people with different positions as an Investor is someone who commits capital in order to gain financial returns. A broker is a person who buys and sells goods or assets for others. A trader is a person who buys and sells the stock in the market. A corporate raider is an investor who buys a large number of shares in a corporation whose assets appear to be undervalued. The stock market has a lot of terms that define small things that broker/traders need to know to work in the stock market as like derivatives which are contracts between two or more parties. Other small stuff come into play as in commodities which are marketable items produced to satisfy wants or needs of the people. Dividends are payments made by a corporation to its shareholder members which are basically the portion of corporate profits paid out to stockholders. Now here are the big terms that people should be aware of to try to make it big as like Equity which is the residual claim or interest of the most junior class of investors in assets, after all liabilities are paid. Golden Parachutes are agreements that are made between a company and an employee (usually upper executive) specifying that the employee will receive certain significant benefits if employment is terminated which put a lot of CEOââ¬â¢s in the jackpot and have them rich for a long while. And finally, Liquidation which is the process by which a company (or part of a company) is brought to an end, and the assets and property of the company redistributed. This brings a lot of businesses down and suffers. Insider trading used all the time by brokers and traders to get ahead of the game and earn big bucks and live life. Itââ¬â¢s a strategy that a lot of the brokers live by and use to make them successful as itââ¬â¢s the trading of a corporationââ¬â¢s stock or other securities (such as bonds or stock options) by individuals with access to non-public information about the company. It brings the inside scoop about businesses to brokers to give them a chance and advantage to invest and make a lot of money before News is released to the public. Fraud is an intentional deception made for personal gain or to damage another individual. The economy can be harmed by these types of strategies as Insider trading can be used for unfair advantage for investors as it helps them show what to invest before everyone else and BIG Bucks before anyone. Fraud is harmful as it steals money away from people that are rightfully theirs and brings people into debt with the people stealing their money come out to become very wealthy and use their stolen money on special interests and personal gains when none of that money is earned by them. So insider trading helps investors cheat the game of the stock market and fraud helps investors steal the money that is rightfully own to the people which is basically stealing money from the economy of the U. S. The SEC tries to prevent those things by for insider trading; they try to track down anyone they believe is to be involved as they obtain warrants for financial records and wiretaps, and find any other means to pursue the evidence that comes their way. If enough evidence is found to indict someone for insider trading, the individuals will be arrested and the case is handed over to a U. S. attorney. They do it because insider trading is unfair to the stock market game and the other investors and traders who are not involved in insider trading. For fraud, the SEC tries to prevent that by first to help educate investors to protect themselves against fraud, second, they conduct regulatory examinations to ensure that firms have robust compliance systems to prevent and detect fraud and other violations, and finally, they aggressively prosecute securities fraud, working together with criminal prosecutors. They do this because they believe that businesses should deserve this horrible incident to happen to them financially and should protect themselves from cunning con artists out there in society. Finally, about the movie Wall Street (1987)â⬠¦.. The movie ââ¬Å"Wall streetâ⬠was a really good and educational movie at some points as it was well-directed and helped showed the pros and cons of working in the stock market and how people entering that type of field should be fearless and aware of anything that is going on underground or in public and be picky on who to trust as there are a lot of ââ¬Å"Gordon Gekkoââ¬â¢sâ⬠in the world befriending many traders/brokers and stabbing them in the back at any moment based on their feelings/impression about them. Some key scenes in the movie were to be the ââ¬Å"Greed is goodâ⬠speech as it helped pictured an image what the U. S. is truly is and where it will be with the economy. The scene which Bud fox found out the sale of Blue-Star was pretty dramatic as it helped Bud realize how cruel and Greedy Gordon Gekko was. And another key Scene was the confrontation between Gordon and Bud after Bud found out about the sale of Blue-Star. The Movie showed that stock market is hectic and scary and people should watched their step on which path theyââ¬â¢re going to take as they could fall into a hole anytime with either having SEC involved with it or lose a ton of money and be sent on to the streets. The stock market is a scary and hectic field to pursue a career in but if people have the brains, the charm and the look, through strategically planning and working, they can come out very successful and be at the top. But the market can always change people, physically, mentally and personality wise like once they go into the field itââ¬â¢s hard to get out and it sometimes changes them into a different person probably into a person with Greed to make more and more, probably a ââ¬Å"Gordon Gekkoâ⬠.
